Hi
Wet and miserable here at the moment, so enjoy your fine weather!!!!
Hi from The Carters

Snap shot of the Daily Events
Big shift in culture going from the wide streets of South Pasadina to the somewhat dodgy Venice Beach. Hollywood was the same sorta thing, theatres and flashy restaurants mixed in with street dealers. Real great experience of a really different yet quite similar culture. Oscar Clarke
The footballs was an awesome experience, introduced the Americans to a few chants. Unfortunately Poly lost by one point with 4 seconds to go. Venice beach was really hot and sunny. A lot of aspiring rappers and dodgy people offering drugs. Whole of that beach was quite dodgy but saw some impressive paddle tennis and some stereotypical policeman with aviators and guns. McDermott
The football game was just like the movies, was awesome seeing how passionate some people are about it especially in the final moments. Venice beach wasn't what I expected, was full of people trying to leech money off you with many "soon to be famous" rappers asking me to buy their CD. Also got a chance to have a workout at the Venice beach exercise bars which was great. - Esterhuizen
Highlights so far are Venice beach and the delicious and nutritious meals I have been able to find myself. South California has some darn good wraps.. Mmm. Asher, Kyle and I hired some bikes at Venice beach and cruised along the waterfront where, as Kyle mentioned above, we found some sweet exercise bars and got in a nice workout. But our efforts were put to shame by this one guy who was casually doing muscle ups and sets of 10m rope climbs with no legs.mUniversal studios was pretty boring though, hopefully magic mountain is better. I just looked out the window. We have arrived at magic mountain. Yes... T.Batts
TOUCHDOWN! An epic atmosphere at the football game; apart from the poly losing it was a great experience. Venice beach was an interesting place, had interesting people and interesting things, was cool watching people produce an 'Air Jordan' ad and to get interviewed for a promotion of a chocolate bar called Klondike (??). The tour at universal studios was fascinating seeing all the scenes from popular movies and tv shows. Magic Mountain 6 Flags...Wow - H.Watt
A few amazing and interesting experiences so far! We went to Venice Beach yesterday and boy was it both amazing and a bit weird. some amazing and beautiful views - especially whilst riding a bike along the long strip of Venice beach until we reached Santa Monica Pier. After this we then had a fun filled day ahead at Universal Studios. Today we drove to Magic Mountain and all I could say is "AHHHHHHH" it was truly amazing riding all the huge thrilling rides that took you on a crazy ride that left you trying to find the nearest wall or rail to recover. Overall having a great time and this heat is just insane!
- Asher Meltzer
So far everything is going good, apart from throwing up on the bus... twice. And relieving myself in a Gatorade bottle.. once. Today we went to magic mountain it was AMAZING the roller coasters are insane. Having a great time. -Guy Kilmister
The football game was everything I thought it would be, complete with cheerleaders and the winning touchdown being scored in the last 4 seconds. Venice beach was a bit like hollywood boulevard- lots of homeless people and dodgy shops. Today at magic mountain we spent the day riding roller coasters which were amazing!- Hamish Kerr
I'm a bad boy, 'cause I don't even miss her, and I'm a bad boy for breaking her heart, and I'm free, free fallin' - T. Petty
Chucked out a Haka at the end of the day at Universal Studios- we've got a winning pickup method for the USA! F.Boswell
Have really been enjoying myself for the past few days, the roller coasters were so much fun and so huge, what an amazing experience!- K.Madgwick
I'd say at Venice beach most people were high.... The theme park was really fun with great rides. Josh Ellis
Hi From The Grieves
Hi All, great to be part of your travels with the blogsite – thanks Ben! Looks like you’re having a great time but James not sure we will be able to maintain the high standards on your return – interviewing for maids and searching for pop tarts today!! Dad’s not talking about the Southland v/s Canterbury score – convinced they sent their Under 15 side by mistake – 84 nil!! Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Update
I hope the photos being uploaded aren't generating too much jealously. We are all obviously having a wonderful time as the images show.
The boys went to bed almost two hours ago (9:45pm) after a massive day out. So we can now provide a quick list of what we have done since last time:
Fri 28 Sept
Mr Jordan's vocal support couldn't secure a Pasadena Poly victory (the football team lost in the last play with 4 sec left- very high scoring 43-42)
Sat 29 Sept
The boys were dropped back by their billets at 8am
A morning at Venice Beach was 'enjoyed' (I'll get the boys to recount their impressions while we have downtime on the bus tomorrow and then will upload them for your reading)
We attacked Universal Studios, with the boys loving the rides/shows/tours
Dinner was 'out and about' on the Universal City Strip- 20000 people were in attendance around the location for a Halloween Special
Clearly a Haka was needed so the boys delivered!
Points of Note:
This is a brand new feature! In this section I'll set the record straight on several matters (or slightly bend the truth on a couple of matters). All is in the name of humour, and no stone will be unturned. Watch out tour members, you are all on notice that "What goes on tour, goes on the blog". So. . .
1. Yes, a certain M Haycock left his passport in Auckland Airport only to be located by a highly organised Mr Gordon prior to going to customs. This Haycock individual has repaid the kindness by taking the initiative and directing half the team back to the hotel when F Boswell got everyone lost.
2. Yes, Mr Gordon kept his entire team waiting as he had to fill out an American arrival card 4 times due to his inability to create an error free form
3. Yes, T Lorimer was sick on the plane (a good night sleep with the loving attention provided by a Pasadena Poly mum fixed him up immediately so that he could nail the Hollywood run like a real star. G Kilmister then took the bug (while on both occasions Mr Skeen won the rights to carry the full spew bags). Everyone is fit and well now though.
4. Yes, T Batts and H Watt impressively led the charge to the summit of the Hollywood sign. However this energy consumption led Tom to forget a whole section of the Haka whilst leading it in front of the Pasadena Poly parents. Huge cultural insensitivity Tom
5. Yes, Mr Jones did steal the show by feeling it necessary to sing to the Pasadena 1st graders in native Welsh tongue. And yes he is a very good singer. Show off!
6. Yes, even with the help of A Meltzer as tour captain, P Carter and J Ellis were still not able to strike up a conversation with two young ladies. Neither party is passing a comment on this event to the kind blog editor however these things are passed on Paddy and Josh (you cannot hide).
7. Yes, H Barclay privately paid a maid to make his bed and then claimed to the family hosting him that he had made it himself. The compliments they made about him were sickening.
8. Yes, J Kenrick did create a brand new word today upon completing a behind the scenes tour of Universal Studios in a tram. He really believes the word 'tramtastic' is cool. James, really?
9. Yes, Mr Jordan had to pick up the bill for bike hire at Venice Beach as a certain Mr Gordon ran off with paying for his (Mr Jordan still hasn't remembered this fact yet, but will surely say it was an honest mistake when he does)
10. Yes, Mr Skeen walked around all of today believing it was Friday (when it was actually Saturday) and therefore totally mucked up the catch up between R Lockhart and his cousin. SO SO sorry. Therefore a certain Skeen character will be buying them both breakfast in the morning. Seriously that Skeen individual is a real muppet.
Having noted the above, it is clear we have a very happy, humourous and cohesive team of misfits (staff included). Please help us share the humour and experiences by joining in the publication of this site. We would love parents to interact by commenting on photos or even better writing blogs back using the blog email address that I sent for direct uploading). The boys will certainly love reading your comments.
Again, these young men have behaved in a truly outstanding manner to date. It really is a pleasure to see them enjoying a foreign environment.
Bet to go before midnight arrives.
Billeting
At the football game it was really cool to get to know some of the billets who we weren't staying with.
M Wallace
So what was billeting like?
The billets made sure I had fun and that I was looked after very well.
Basically, they treated me better than my real family. I expect improvements when I get back.
-Z.Xie
A real American family experience which was a real eye opener, they took me to a high school football game which had a amazing atmosphere. - H.Watt
Say goodbye to Hollywood, say goodbye my baby - B. Joel
Pretty awesome few days at Pasadena, think I've drank about 4L in Gatorade... - F.Boswell
I went to my first football game last night and had waffles and pop tarts for breakfast! - R.Lockhart
I had a really awesome time with my billet family. Their hospitality was fantastic. I also enjoyed the American football game last night. - S.Perera
Really enjoyed my billets families hospitality, they were really nice and welcoming and they seemed to enjoy our stay with them.-K.Madgwick
As has been mentioned, hospitality from the billets was amazing. Stayed with a half persian, half Caucasian girl's family (interesting mix I know). They actually went out of their way to buy us the type of cereal and even the type of milk we wanted. And don't worry mum I was well fed too. - T.Batts
Had fun with the billets, especially going to the American football game. Turns out that Americans interpret "sweet as" as "sweet ass". Been getting some weird looks lately... A. McDermott
What an experience! Staying with the billets was everything I had imagined every stereotype about an "American Family" was met; Massive portions of food, typical American house with a USA flag flying high and much more. They treated me with absolutely respect like I was their own. Overall great experience! American football game was pretty wicked too!
- A. Meltzer
Pretty awesome few days in Pasadena, what an experience! Really enjoyed my billet family's hospitality. A real American family experience which was a real eye opener. The billets were real nice and interested in things we did in NZ. Went to my first football game last night and had waffles and pop tarts for breakfast!
My stay in Pasadena has been so amazing and just how I thought an American family would be like- they spoke kinda weird but it was very good hospitality- H. Kerr
My family from Pasadena was amazing! They fed me well and I got a great sleep. The family was really friendly as well and made sure we had everything we needed. They were awesome!

Update
Finally managed some internet access. Thanks for your patience! Below are a series of snaps covering off the major events to date. They include:
Doing a Haka at Pasadena Poly this morning (Fri 28 Sept)
Running to the Hollywood sign- heat at 39 degrees
Venturing up Hollywood Bl
Amazing, amazing meal put on by the Pasadena Poly parents
Now heading to watch Poly play in a local American football game (7pm start), followed by night #2 with the fantastic hosts that Rick (the Head Coach of Pasadena Poly Cross Country Running) has kindly organised.
We are off tomorrow to Universal Studios which everyone is looking forward to.
The boys are a real hit with the locals (esp the accents). All have sore bodies right now after the epic run, but massive smiles are all around.
I will get the boys on the blog in the very near future to share their experiences- just hard getting internet coverage at present.
Take care all.
First Impressions
America is a very diverse culture to the kiwi one- LA is big, smelly and flat. H. Kerr
We are driving down the motorway and all you can see is advertising, huge movie banners hanging from buildings and brightly coloured takeaway signs dominating the concrete landscape. O. Clarke
I hopped off the plane at LAX with a dream in my cardigan, like welcome to the land of fame excess (whoo), am I gonna fit in? - M. Cyrus
It's very different and not what I expected - so hot and a very industrial environment.. A.meltzer
Very tired and hungry- this place is much bigger, dirtier and more polluted than home- M Haycock
Just one big concrete jungle. K.Esterhuizen
Why would you populate a flat desert?.. I'm just seeing different shades of dusty greys and browns and whites, with lots of random palm trees which seem to be very unhappy about their location. L.A. is trying to deceive me into thinking its tropical... T.Batts
LA is huge, dirty, and hot but it is a pretty awesome place...Don't know why, just is. McDermott
A bit tired from the long plane ride but wow, everything in L.A is so much bigger than NZ! Also, it's really hot and dry. S.Baek
Everything is two times bigger here: the billboards, the buildings, the cars. And the people. -Z.Xie
