Student Impressions

Hawaii is soooo cool. We arrived yesterday 30mins early for the first time this tour. We were greeted by really really hot heat, and palm trees. Punahou high school is really different to Auckland schools as the classes start from 730 right up to 1130 and end at different times. We just finished at an insane beach with a reef. Hawaii is one of my favourite places on this trip so far. - M Wallace

Hawaii has been so fun and is one of my favourite places on this tour. We just went to an awesome beach which was really fun. Punahou high school has been really welcoming and cool- nearly everyone in the school knows each other in one way or another which is really cool. Overall Hawaii has been amazing. - M.Haycock

Hawaii is really hot and humid with fantastic scenery and friendly locals. Really looking forward to the race tomorrow and the beaches to come. J Ellis

Kick-back. I see sunshine, beaches, surf. Turn around and I'm greeted by steep valleys covered in forest; reminds me of the island from King Kong. Freakn sweeet. I am in my element. - T. Batts

Hawaii is really humid and hot but it's really chill and relaxing. Punahou school is surprisingly big and really friendly. We went to some beaches today and had a swim and took photos of the amazing scenery. Nervous about the race tomorrow because of the heat but I'm excited about the rest of the time here.

Although we have only been in Hawaii for a short time I am already thinking if it as one of the main highlights of the tour so far. The host family I am staying with has made sure I experience what Hawaii is really about and invited me into their "O'hana" (family) with open hands. Last night they made me drink from a coconut, have guava, pineapple and a weird fruit they called a "dragons eye" - to my surprise the taste of this unique fruit was incredible despite its foul looks and smell. Then to end this amazing first night with my host family I walked into my room and laying on my bed was a bunch of goodies just for me - a t-shirt, post cards, a Hawaiian necklace made from shells and rocks and a coconut bra... Which they had a bit of a laugh about and begged me to try it on when I then responded "I might wear it for the race if you're lucky". Overall my host family is amazing! Everything else in Hawaii to top it off is just incredible - amazing scenery, awesome sun and beaches and people are so friendly! Bit nervous about the race tomorrow but I'm sure everyone will run their guts out!

As we come to the twilight of the tour Hawaii adds a whole new aspect to what I've experienced so far. The family I'm staying with are great group of people who are just as interested in NZ as I am in Hawaii. Going into school today was just another opportunity to see how Punahao is different to Grammar, before heading out as a group I was invited to spend an hour in a class that is based around talking to a group of Seniors about their feelings (slightly different to a typical Friday morning class at our school!). #lovinhawaii

iHola compadres! Having a great time in Hawaii, looking forward to my race tomorrow, should be nice and hot. Had a awesome day at the beach swimming for hours and hours in the Pacific. Hawaii reminds me a lot of our trip to Bali, especially today along the North shore. Jack Johnson lives on the north shore and one of grammars billets babysits for him and I was hoping to see him walking down the beach playing "banana pancakes"... But he never came :( any way missing the family heaps, sort of cant wait to get home!!!

Hawaii is awesome so far, quite excited to hear that my billet babysits for Jack Johnson's kids, I asked if she ever had to separate them but apparently they're Better Together, by her account they sound like really Good People, also it sounds like his house is pretty cool If I Had Eyes for things like that. Also Mrs. Boswell (as Fletcher insists I must address you), thanks for the mention, it brought a momentary splash of light to my otherwise dull and meaningless life, although I'm afraid I won't be able to accompany Fletcher's sweet and mellifluous singing voice with ukulele as the fire in me died with Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.
